Every year World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) organizes World Breastfeeding Week (WBW), an annual celebration held from 1st to 7th August to promote breastfeeding for the six months of life and its medicinal and nutritional benefits.

This year the Breastfeeding Week has started under the slogan Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life.

“In a world filled with inequality, crises and poverty, breastfeeding is the foundation of lifelong good health for babies and mothers,” WABA website reads.

To emphasize on the importance of working together to protect, promote and support breastfeeding, WABA this year came up with logo comprising of Branches, Leaves and a Triad of two adults and an infant.

“Branches, leaves and sprouts represent growth and development. The line extending from the triad and sprouting into leaves are the links between breastfeeding and nutrition, food security and poverty reduction,” Website further reads.

Celebrated first time in the year in 1992 by WABA, WBW is now observed in more than 120 countries by UNICF, WHO along with the partners including individuals, organizations, and governments.

WABA was founded on 14th February 1991 with the goal to re-establish a global breastfeeding culture and provide support for breastfeeding everywhere.
