Every year World Food Day (WFD) is being celebrated on the 16th October to commemorate the foundation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, which was established in the year 1945.
With an aim to maintain food security especially in times of crisis, the day is being celebrated widely throughout the world by many organizations including the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agriculture Development.
In recent years, World Food Day has used its annual day of celebration to focus on different aspects of food security and agriculture, including fishing communities, climate change and biodiversity.
The WFD was founded in November 1979 during 20th General Conference of the member countries of FAO.
Earlier during the 20th session of the FAO Conference, the Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Pál Romány suggested the idea of celebrating the WFD worldwide. Since then it has since been observed every year in more than 150 countries, raising awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger.
The theme for this year’s WFD is ‘our actions are our future’.
