Three scientists share Nobel Prize for Physics 2018

The scientists Donna Strickland, Gérard Mourou and Arthur Ashkin were awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in physics for their groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics.

The trio received the award on 2nd October.

Arthur Ashkin received the prize for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems while Gerard Mourou and Donna Strickland were jointly awarded for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

Strickland became the third woman to receive a Nobel in physics. The other two were Marie Curie and Maria Goeppert-Mayer who were bestowed with the noble prize in Physics in1903 and 1963 respectively.
