In the year 1974 the Rubik cube was invented by Hungarian architect, Erno Rubik. Made up of nine coloured squares on each side, the cube can be rearranged in 43 quintillion different ways. That is 43,000,000,000,000,000,000.
Erno later told that he actually wanted a working model to help explain three-dimensional geometry. He himself first realized that he could not actually solve the puzzle. The more he moved the coloured squares, the more mixed up they became. “It was a code I myself had invented!” he wrote, “Yet I could not read it.”
After a month, and using a method of rearranging the corners of each side first, he finally solved the puzzle.

With the passage of time the toy became famous throughout the world and in Kashmir as well. Children in the valley used to call it a “Mind Game”.
By January 2009, more than 350 million units had been sold worldwide, making it the biggest-selling toy of all time.
Rubik Cube won toy of the year twice-in 1980 and 1981 in the UK.
