Precautions to be Taken During Cold Weather

Representational Picture

Wear proper clothing and cover a face to fight cold waves.

The first sign of frostbite is redness or pain in any skin area. To avoid further damage get out of the cold or protect any exposed skin.

Keep checking the elderly and sick people.

Frozen food that has melted but exceeded 40 degrees should be prepared quickly.

Be extra cautious in the wind. A strong wind, even in only moderately cold weather, can cause a wind chill far below freezing.

Lookout for hypothermia symptoms

Exposure to cold-weather conditions or cold water is the most common causes of hypothermia. But prolonged exposure to any environment colder than your body can lead to hypothermia if you aren’t dressed appropriately or can’t control the conditions. So, it is necessary to be extra cautious during harsh winter.

Symptoms:

Confusion, drowsiness, slurred speech, a drop in blood pressure, shallow breathing and a pinkish tint to the skin.

Conditions leading to hypothermia include:

Wearing clothes that aren’t warm enough for weather conditions

Staying out in the cold too long

Being unable to get out of wet clothes or move to a warm, dry location

Falling into the water, as in a boating accident

Living in a house that’s too cold, either from poor heating or too much air conditioning
