Food Security or Food Sovereignty

Representational Picture

Hygienic food is the primary life essential. If a country is not able to feed her population, it cannot develop. However, states can import food from the one that has the surplus food, and in return sell them some other things which that country does not possess or is not as good at producing that domestically. That is the underlying economics.

However, food sovereign- at least in the staple food-countries have developed way more quickly than the ones dependent on others for their staple food. In actuality, the latter’s growth has taken a negative trend.

Producing enough food for the population, domestically, makes a country food sovereign. However, food-secure countries import deficit food from other countries. Although rarely anyone dies in the food-secure region of starvation, if the governments have optimal measures of distribution, it is still at risk in case some natural or unnatural calamity occurs.

(Remember, food items are quickly perishable and not so portable article to export)

Modern agriculture has gone beyond traditional techniques. Mechanized and organic farming is in vogue. However, we are still dependent on chemicals and pesticides. Our farming techniques still need 4000-5000 litres of fresh water to produce one kg of food grain.

We expect our crops to grow without putting any marginal effort on the table. The days of Manna from Heaven have gone past. We cannot keep shifting from the staple food to cash crops for long. Imagine, how would wazwan look without rice? We need to be food sovereign in the rice production. After that, everything will follow. Don’t you think that with the help of modern farming techniques and organic fertilizers, We can achieve the goal in no time?
