Metacognition: A Critical component of Successful Learning

Representational Picture

Metacognition is the ability to think about own thinking processes, such as study skills, memory capabilities, and the ability to monitor learning. It is considered a critical component of successful learning.

In academic terms it not “what I need to learn”, but, “how can I learn it best.”

Metacognition can be taught by asking students to think about that they successfully learn.

7 great metacognitive questions for students

What should I do first?

Is anything confusing to me?

Can I explain what I have learned?

Should I ask for extra help?

Why did I get this answer wrong?

Can I apply this in different contexts?

How can I do better next time?

Questions like these help students plan more effectively, understand their strength and weakness, and reflect on and improve their learning
