The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was founded in Paris on May 21st, 1904. The foundation was signed by the representatives of the seven countries which include, France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

On 28th May 1928 FIFA decided to stage the first FIFA Football World Cup. Uruguay was chosen to host the tournament. It was after two years, which is in 1930, that the first FIFA Football World Cup was played. The tournament was played from July 18th to July 30th of the same year in the state capital Montevedio.

Thirteen teams took part in this event. While seven teams were from South America, four were from Europe and two were from North America. The teams were divided into four groups. The first two World Cup matches took place simultaneously where France and the United States were the winners.

Lucien Laurent of France became the first person in history to score the first goal in the World Cup. Argentina, the United States, Uruguay and Yugoslavia qualified for the semi-finals.

United States and Yugoslavia lost the semi finals and the final was played between Uruguay and Argentina in which Uruguay defeated Argentina by 4-2 goals. In this tournament 18 matches were played and 70 goals scored.

Since then FIFA organizes this world famous trophy after every four years, except in 1942 and 1946 due to World War 2nd (1939-45), total of 20 tournaments have been played so far.

This year’s FIFA World Cup is going to be held in Russia in which 32 teams are participating. This will be played in the 11 host cities starting from June 14th to July 15th.
